Marriage Is a Game

As I meandered through the brightly colored flea market on a tiny tropical island in Mexico, my heart sank when I saw this image on t-shirts available for both men and women. I wondered, “Has the idea of being in a committed marriage really come down to a joke on a t-shirt?”

Although it is true that we are all playing the game of life, many of us don’t realize that we are all winning the hidden, individual games we are playing within the game. For some of us, these wins are pleasant experiences, like having a great family or being successful at work. For others, the wins don’t feel like wins at all, such as not being good enough or being the unluckiest person ever! Whatever the game, we are definitely doing things to make sure we win.

While playing games can be fun, they are usually played to determine a winner and a loser, right? The typical problem with the game of marriage is that each of us wants to be a winner. As a result, we unintentionally do things to help our spouse be a loser and who actually wants to be a married to a loser?!

When it comes to marriage, what kind of game do you want to be playing?

You really do get to choose.

Think about your current relationship; would you like to win at the game of “It’s us against the world, Babe,”

or the game of “It’s me against you!”

Would it feel better to win at the game of “What is this, I’m really trying to understand where you are coming from,”

or “What the HELL is this?!”

Whatever games you choose, intentional or not, you are guaranteed to win. So why not make a conscious choice to play a game with a happy ending for both of you? Many couples have tried to change the game on their own without success.
